Last night I had a dream and that dream seemed to be too real so much so that I sat to write this almost 5000 words article on Astral Dimension Different Dimensions after my morning meditation. It was so real – the texture, the colors, the feel, the anxiety, the joy, the movement, and everything in it—appeared to be nothing else but the only real world to me, except for the fact that I awoke from that dream and found myself again in the physical world. I go into as much detail as possible from the theoretical to the practical like how it actually FEELS. So let’s begin…
There seems to be a dichotomy within our personality. The subjective and the objective worlds seem to be too real.
Descartes, the great modern philosopher said: “Cogito ergo sum,” that is, “I think, therefore, I am.”
To him the basis of reality is the mind which gives color and texture to the objective world. Sans the mind, the physical world will continue to have an objective existence, but it will just be there, aimless and meaningless. But with the mind, the world suddenly comes to life, because the aimless movements of energy are suddenly perceived by a thinking mind in time and space.
Astral Dimension Different Dimensions Part #1: Inability to explain the Astral Realm perfectly
Words sometime lack in vigor and succinctness in explaining a known reality. Say for example, I utter the words “subconscious mind” or “ethereal body.” To an uninitiated mind, it doesn’t convey any meaning. But we attribute meaning to these words in order to communicate our thoughts. In the same way, if I speak about astral projection and astral realm, I am speaking in abstract terms which sometimes fail to convey the total experience of astral realms and projection. But in some way, the words I use could approximate the astral experience and we could end up having a common understanding of the astral experience.
The Astral realm and astral projection are better experienced than explained. But for the benefit of a more cohesive explanation of these phenomena, we have to understand some of the terms use to explain astral realm. We all know that astral realm is beyond physical realm. If we find ourselves already lacking in ability to concretely explain physical realities, how much more would it be when we try to explain astral realities. Yet let me endeavor to concretize in words the astral realm which is by its nature non-concrete and non-physical.
The realities of the Astral Dimension Different Dimensions
We usually view realities relatively, i.e., we see realities from a certain point-of-view. As spiritual beings couched in a physical body, our perspective is tinged by our physical body. Yet our viewpoint is not purely physical. We have the mind which is beyond physical. For this reason, throughout the ages, man is sometimes referred to as a “rational being,” an “incarnated subjectivity,” an “embodied consciousness” and many more. This only shows that despite having a physical body, our capability as a being goes beyond the physical dimension.
People with near-death experience have gone into the fringes of the astral plane of existence. Likewise, mystics and contemplators know the astral plane. Those who practice astral projection know that there are certain realities beyond the physical plane of existence and they are open for our exploration and discovery.
The other subtle bodies in an Individual:
Beside the physical body, there are other subtle bodies within a human person which we may never be aware of, but for the sake of understanding, we many call it “Etheric body“, “Astral Body“, “Spiritual Body“, “Soul” and “Ghost” or whatever you prefer; though it may not be proper to call them bodies because the word “body” is often used to refer to concrete realities.
Yet for the sake of understanding better, we could use the word “body” to refer to it. In the ongoing discussion, I will interchangeably use etheric body, soul, spirit and astral body to refer to that “psychic form” which we usually espoused when we enter the astral realm.
The “Etheric Body” isn’t a concrete body:
It is made of psychic energy which has formed into a cohesive being. It is the being which is left when we take from the equation the physical body. It is the consciousness of a person which has been detached from the material or physical form. This has been a source of puzzle to intelligent people who try to understand the astral reality. The overarching question of “what happens to consciousness when one dies,” has not been concretely answered.
We only have glimpses of answers about the fate of consciousness when one dies. Some would say that consciousness disintegrates into nothingness when one dies. Others would contend that consciousness continues to exist after the physical body disintegrates since it is made of etheric matter. Others say that consciousness goes to heaven or other dimensions. While others maintain that consciousness just hovers around the physical world unable to leave the physical realm to which they have been so much attached (as in the cases of ghosts and wraiths in a haunted house).
Yet, basing our explanations on the belief of the seven planes of existence, we could say that consciousness does not disintegrate into its fundamental elements, but continues to exist even after the disintegration of the physical body. For this reason, we could say that consciousness is made up of more durable matter than the physical body, and all the mystical religions attest to this belief. Beyond the physical world is another dimension where beings or consciousness exist in different subtle forms called astral forms or etheric bodies.

Astral Dimension Different Dimensions Part #2: Imagination to explain the Astral World
Those who haven’t had an experience of near-death experience, astral projection, or Out-of-body Experience (OOBE), will never really understand the astral realities. However, we could use our imagination to approximately explain the astral realities and understand them.
People who had OOBE have tried to explain what they underwent during the near-death experience, giving our imagination some imaginative food to work on. Some of them told us that they had a tunnel-like experience wherein they were moving very fast towards a very bright light. They also say that there seemed to be a tug of forces to stay in the physical body or leave it for something wonderful.
These accounts of people with OOBE (out of body experiences) seemingly explain the astral realm. Let me give you another concrete example of why realities are dependent on one’s perspective. Say for example, a fish who has been used to living in a very wide ocean would sometimes think (if it has consciousness) that the only reality is the ocean. Yet, it finds itself in awe and shock if it is uprooted from the ocean waters and placed on the sand. It occasionally dies out because it could not cope with the new reality.
In the same way, a person who is suddenly exposed to astral realities finds itself in awe and shock as to what kind of realities he/she may be in. With all his/her faculties being habitually used and accustomed to the physical world, one finds him/herself suddenly with no use for those faculties and thus become confused. This is the normal experience of those who are newly initiated to the astral world.
The confusion is very obvious and it is with the sense of sight. The human eyes suddenly become useless when one is suddenly transported into the astral world. The length, width, and height dimensions become non-essential; even time becomes a non-entity.
This is because the astral world is a prelude into the infinite world where time and space do not rule!
Yet, of course, you can never immediately do away with old physical habits. In the instance that you enter the astral realm, you still carry over with you your old conscious habits, especially if you consciously chose to do an astral projection.
The point of entry into the astral realm happens in real time. The feeling is great.
The psychic self suddenly carries the image of the physical body into the astral realm and there is the eerie feeling that everything in sight is dissolving into light. Even the concept of the physical body dissolves before us in the astral realm giving us the impression that our physical body is melting away like wax.
The Etheric Body Explained
Many people say that aside from the physical body, we have an etheric body which they say is the actual life-force produced by all existing beings and things. It is believed to be the substance between physical and the astral realities. It is definitely partly astral and partly physical. They even say that it exhibits actual weight.
For this reason, some scientific studies tried to find out the actual weight of the etheric body by connecting the dying person to an actual weighing scale and figuring out the weight before dying and after dying.
Experiments like these indicated that at the exact moment of death, there is an actual weight loss of a quarter of the total weight of the dying person. Since matter is interchangeable with energy, there seem to be a movement from matter into energy during the process of death and we call this “in-between” material as the etheric matter or body.
Thus, etheric matter is the link between the physical and the astral world. It is the material that makes possible the astral experience in the physical world.
Without the etheric body, the non-physical realities revert back to nothingness!
The Etheric Body is produced by living organisms in our world. It is the vibrational energy of living beings, like a silver cord which ties the physical world to the astral world. It allows the transfer of energy from less pure physical entities to a purer astral entity.
What is the silver cord?
This silver cord of etheric matter makes possible the gradual transition from the physical plane of existence to the astral plane of existence. The silver cord usually emanates from the Chakra that is most active during the process of movement from physical plane to astral plane. Thus the silver cord is usually seen by projectors as emanating from the forehead or from the navel.
Since everything is made possible by the force of energy, whether physical energy or astral energy, the transfer of energy is necessary to realize and make effective astral projection. Without this energy transfer, the consciousness becomes weak and incapable of projecting itself into the astral plane. There is basically a strong need for reservoir of energy to make possible an enlivening astral experience.

Astral Dimension Different Dimensions Part #3: You have to develop and train the Chakras
The chakras are the points through which energy moves from one plane of existence to another. Thus the necessity of developing and learning to harness the use of chakra is imperative. Developing and controlling the chakras may sometimes take years of practice. However, this should not deter you from maximizing the use of your chakras. We all know that around us is the continuous flow of universal creative energy. Don’t be disheartened!
This universal energy is ours for the taking:
To enhance and maximize our out of body experiences and astral projection experiences, we should learn how to harness these universal creative energies.
Opening up your chakras could let the flow of this universal creative energy from one form of body to another form of body.
How chakras opening help?
1.) The more energy we let into our chakras, the greater will be our openness to other planes of existence
2.) The higher will be our tolerance to some abrupt and eerie changes during OOBE or astral projection.
The goal of every human person is to achieve a higher form of existence by moving from one plane of existence to another plane of existence. The lower plane of existence is the physical plane.
In order of succession, there are six other higher planes of existence, namely:
- the astral,
- the causal,
- the akashic,
- the pure mental state,
- the Messianic Plane,
- and the Buddhaic Plane of existence.
These planes of existence correspond to our different levels of consciousness. Of course, in between each plane of existence lies a buffer zone which delineates the boundary between one plane of existence with another plane of existence. We may call these buffer zones as sub-planes of existence.
We could only use our imagination to visualize how these planes of existence exist side by side with each other. I would like to use the spectrum as a perfect physical comparison of these different planes of existence.
Each color of the light spectrum represents a stratum with different frequencies. In between each spectrum is a substratum which serves as the boundary of each stratum. Yet this comparison is a far-fetched comparison, owing to the fact that the planes of existence are NOT comparable to any physical phenomenon. I would say it is a spiritual reality, better understood when experienced than when explained using words.
Having the right amount of energy to move from one plane to another
The role played by energy in the process of moving from one plane of existence to another plane of existence is critical to the success of one’s ascent into the higher planes of existence. One has to be infused with the right amount and kind of energy to be able to undergo the metamorphosis.
Say for instance, you want to enter the astral plane of existence; then you should have the right amount of etheric energy just to gain entry into the buffer zone between the physical and astral planes of existence. Moreover, to maintain oneself in the buffer zone, one has to garner more etheric energy.
To pierce further and deeper into the astral realm, one has to accumulate more etheric energy to sustain oneself in one’s journey into the astral realm of existence. Thus astral projection is not meant for the weaklings in spirit.
The spiritual universal energy can only be had by those who are receptive to the frequency of that universal energy.
Let me again give an example here:
A person whose IQ is within the range of imbecile should not be asked to formulate equations which are not within his mental capacity. It is asking too much from that person. Likewise, we could say that existent beings have their own capacity in reference to levels of existence. If you talk to a guy who could not even rise up to a conversation which deals with ideas, the natural tendency for that guy is to get bored immediately and shy away from you if you proffered a discussion on intellectual and abstract concepts.
Since the guy’s intellectual capacity is so hampered by his mind’s nature, you could not do anything about it. In the same way, you could not go beyond your comfort zone by piercing into the vast expanse of the astral realm if your nature is highly tied to the physical world.
As I have mentioned earlier, people who have been so attached to material things find it hard to abandon their material attachments when they die, and thus their consciousness remains strongly tied up to their material possessions that they are often seen in the forms of ghosts which haunts their place of attachment. Not just objects but people too.
However, if one has to rise up from the illusion of the physical realms and transcend the buffer zone between the astral plane and the physical plane, one has to espouse a higher form, and garner greater amount of spiritual energy which would enable that person to sustain oneself in that spiritual journey to a higher plane of existence.
Raise your energy level to be able to cope with the energy level of the higher planes of existence
The ascent to a higher plane of existence is usually done by raising the level of energy of the consciousness so that it will be congruent with the level of energy of the particular plane of existence. This could be done through constant practice of meditation and advanced work on “chakras” or “energy centers.” The human consciousness can rise up to higher planes of existence if one has been able to imbue oneself of higher form of energy.
Here, the law of attraction still works: “like energy attracts each other, while unlike energy repels each other.”
You could not reach the astral plane of existence without attuning your energy level to the energy level of the astral plane of existence. One has to have the same level of conscious energy to be able to rise up from the inanity of the physical realm and enter into the higher astral form of existence. The above-mentioned methods of meditation and chakra training can greatly imbue our “spirits” or, to use a more common term, our “souls” to rise up to the astral level.

Part #4: Seven Planes of Existence is based on the Concept of the Universal Force
When we try to explain why there are other planes of existence aside from what we know as the physical plane of existence, we are basically asking the very question of “who we are?”
My answer is simple and based on religion, science, and Philosophy.
It is basically a question of whether a part of us would survive after our physical body dies. Would this survival be in the form of a different and more subtle body unlike the physical body we have?
Out of Body Experience (OOBE), Astral Projection, and Lucid Dreams basically point to the existence of a reality beyond the physical realm. I myself wouldn’t accept the fact that the end of everything is death. Our consciousness is made of sturdier stuff which can outlast the physical body. Likewise, our consciousness transcends the limitation of time and space.
Somewhere there, underlying the universe is a universal force, often talked-about in most religions; and to reach this level of universal force, one has to move higher in the hierarchy of energy levels. Something we can do, and others have done in the past. A part of the universal creative force is in us and that part is so muddled sometimes by our body that we fail to recognize its existence in us. Astral projection and chakra training is one way of recognizing the existence of this universal cord that unites us with the universal force.

Part #5: A Short Discussion of the Different Astral Planes of Existence
A cursory look into the seven planes of existence would give us a clearer understanding of the universal life force which makes possible everything in the universe and beyond the physical universe.
1.) The first plane of existence is the physical plane of existence. All the beings which humans have named—dogs, cats, fish, plants, and all microbes and birds—are all parts-and-parcels of the material world.
Likewise, we, as beings which inhabit the physical earth, are physical beings. However, we have consciousness which can go beyond the level of the physical world. Though this poses as a problem to us, we still could say that we are highly privileged to have that capacity to transcend the physical world and move to the next plane of existence.
2.) The next plane of existence is the astral plane of existence. In the oriental religions, the astral plane of existence is contiguous with the physical plane of existence. It is a pure emotional state of existence. Some people just move in and out of the astral plane of existence while living in the physical plane of existence. They enter the astral plane via astral projection, near-death experience, lucid dreams, and meditations.
One of my blog posts might help:
Here are my resources and Top 10 for using these methods.
Dreams are the workings of the subconscious mind and for this reason the astral plane moves in the same energy level as that of the subconscious mind. You may be confused as to the definition of existence. In some way, existence is the mode or manner in which one lives. The spiritual world is a vast world, far richer and more expansive than the physical world. Yet it is a different dimension and a different existence. The astral world is a PRELUDE to the spiritual world.
Once one enters the astral world, one sees a different reality. Time and space—the two mental concepts, which make physical realities seem to be real—collapse and lose its value in the astral plane. Beyond the physical dimension, a new dimension opens up which we call astral. Here we have a glimpse of the fluidity of all reality.
We discover that everything is just a manifestation of the universal life force. In fact, once we have seen the astral plane, we could not help but conclude that the physical world, which we hold on to because it is solidly founded, suddenly becomes plain illusion to our consciousness.
Moreover, we need a higher level of energy to be able to plunge into the astral realm.
But since the astral plane is so closely constituted with the physical plane of existence, carry-over of physical consciousness is apparent when we first enter the astral plane. Confusions occur but soon we will be able to cope with these confusions as we get use to the astral realm.
The survival of our conscious-self is apparent when we enter the astral plane. But slowly we recognize that our very own psychic-self is just a figment of our imagination.
Let me give you a classic example to explain why our “self” which is the very self we always try to protect and nourish in the physical world is just an illusion. We all have a “self-concept” an image of ourselves which we usually carry around and usually thought of as our very “own self.”
Say you are named “John Doe.” John Doe throughout his life has accumulated experiences which make him the “John Doe” which he knows. Now if I say to John Doe that “he is truly obnoxiously ugly,” he might spank me because he loves his self-image that much. But if I jokingly tell him that “his subconscious is obnoxiously ugly,” he may just laugh it off as a casual joke. This only means that the organism which walks and is named as “John Doe” just happened to be called a “John Doe” but in reality it is just an organism with a casual physical existence in the physical world.
Call it whatever you like. I may call it simply an entity but definitely it doesn’t matter at all. What matters is that which exists after the physical entity collapses. In the astral plane of existence, the self-image we have constructed for ourselves suddenly collapses and becomes so fluid that we could hardly recognize it as the self-image we have been protecting ever since we have become conscious of our existence.
When we do astral projection, our hands seem to be melting and our body seems to be disintegrating into the fundamental energy form of which we are created. The sad realization dawns that the self-concept we have created for ourselves is an illusion is a great wisdom. With time and space gone, we simply could not hold on to the self- concepts we have been used to living with. Emotions become prominent and for this reason astral plane of existence is rightly called the realm of emotions.
They say spiritual communication is possible in the astral realm. I would agree with that because certain spirits stay on in the astral realm, unable to travel further into the higher forms of existence, but sadly get stuck in the quagmire of the emotional state of the astral realm. Thus, if you want to communicate with your loved ones, there is a possibility that you could communicate with them IF (AND ONLY IF) their spirits still inhabit the astral realm. However – As long as there is an emotional bond left between you and that person, the possibility of astral communication with your beloved is greatly possible.
3.) The third state—Intellectual state or the Causal Plane of Existence—is an existence based on pure intellectual consciousness. This is an existence wherein, we could control our emotions using conscious control. Somewhere along our stay in the astral plane, we could definitely learn how to live in a manner befitting an astral being. We adapt to the astral realm and put some rein into our emotions.
This plane of existence is rightly called the Causal plane of existence, because we are able to put control into the seemingly uncontrollable reality of the astral plane; we simply use the cause-and-effect concept to give order into the collapsing reality of the physical and astral planes of existence. This is a notch higher than the astral plane of existence and brings us closer to enlightenment.
The fourth plane of existence—Akashic Plane of existence—sometimes poses so many problems to a common mind like ours. It is definitely a state of existence. It is a state wherein we could get a glimpse of the higher spiritual existence. We discover the truth and wisdom which have been collected throughout the ages. Some compare the akashic plane of existence to a huge library which contains all the knowledge of the past and present.
I think it is simply a plane of existence wherein we discover the wisdom behind life—the essential instead of the non-essential, the everlasting instead of the temporary—it is a level of consciousness wherein we see realities whether astral or physical as they truly are, without the trappings of illusion.
4.) Beyond the Akashic plane of existence is the Pure Mental State of Existence. At this state, our consciousness has a greater grasp of what is essential and everlasting. The wisdom brought about by the akashic plane of existence clarifies and removes the cobwebs from our mind. We see clearly, and our energy level has been purified further giving us a higher and more advanced intellectual existence. I believe we could reach this level even though we are still existent in the physical world. Some great minds have done it. So why not you and I?
5.) The Messianic Plane of existence is a notch higher than the pure mental state of existence. At this level of existence, we have a more purified consciousness. We have been truly aware of the illusion of the physical world and we no longer hold on to any physical wealth and treasures. We have gained a different level of energy which is akin to a messianic energy. In some way, we could speak to other people of a reality which is far more wonderful than the reality we have now.
Great messianic people have come into existence in this physical world. Jesus and Buddha have all pointed out to a heavenly reality which is beyond the physical reality we have been used to see. They spoke from a conviction that the reality that we live in is not the only reality. Deep within us is a cord—a spiritual cord—which makes our being akin to the spirit.
This level of consciousness entails a higher form of energy akin to the life force. We have different terms for this reality of which these holy people spoke about—heaven, paradise, Eden, nirvana—yet these concepts are almost the synonymous.
The Buddhaic Plane of existence is a very pure plane of existence. Its purity is seen in the fact that at this level of existence, we are already enlightened. We behold the “ground of being” which is the universal creative life force, the “Tao” which is the only real being. All illusions and misconceptions have been shed off. This maybe what they call the “beatific vision” or “heaven” or “paradise,” where naturally all doubts and mistrusts have just vanished. This is the pure plane of existence where consciousness—if ever it has reached and survived this level—beholds the only true reality which is worth beholding. Time and space has nothing to do with this plane of existence. This is eternity “par excellence.”
The Aim of our Life is in the “Tao”
The aim of our life is to reach the highest level of existence. All oriental and western religions point out to the fact that detachment from physical attachment is one way of moving into the higher planes of existence. This is because we could transcend physical death. We are an “incarnated subjectivity,” an “embodied spirit,” a “rational being.” We could definitely say that we have a noble destiny—a destiny beyond the physical world—which we should really strive for.
And on that note, I will end with an anecdote. One of our readers recently sent us a message asking us what is the point of all this spiritual stuff we go on and on about, all this astral projecting, consciousness raising and spiritual evolution etc etc. Suffice to say, I did not judge but quoted Albert Einstein, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.”
